Thanks Geeker, I'd love to be able to say that I ran in the same race as the Henry Rono, but alas ...

In a 3 month period in 1978 he broke world records in the 10,000m, 5000m, 3000m and 3000m Steeplechase - going one better than Coe did in '79!

I think you might enjoy this article, it gives a brief account of his highs and lows:-

Thanks, Brendan.
I've known a lot of people with alcohol and other substance problems. Sadly, I fear that Rono's fame led a lot of running enthusiasts to "enable" him (topical jargon), so it took a long time for him to find the inevitable bottom. I hope he's sobered up, but am reluctant to research...
I'm sure I soundly beat Rono in the race mentioned (not even sure he finished), but that's nothing to be proud of. Still, I was stunned when the other runner dropped his name.

Thanks for letting us know, jazzgirl. Generally they correct blunders a bit faster.
Also, I've noticed that recent Quiptics have not been posted at 0 UK time on Monday. Perhaps change of policy?

Thanks for the update Jazzgirl:-)

I think, like many others, I suspected it was wrong but was reluctant to say so definitively as you never know what definition might be lurking in the recesses of Chambers - especially in a 1911 edition! I wonder if that might be a collector's item πŸ€”πŸ˜ƒ

Hi Brendan
I would never part with my 1911 edition. It has illustrations on several pages . Grandma's signature is inside the cover and she recovered it a few times, and so have I ☺️
The spine is loose and some pages are very fragile but I treasure it.
One of my favourite illustrations is of a man wearing a 'diving dress' with ' special provision for receiving air 'for use under water. πŸ˜€

Thanks Jazzgirl, I wouldn't mind one of those myself - might even use it for diving 😜
