Morning all. Agree SC was great but always felt Steve Ovett was given a tougher press. Their battles were fantastic. Good puzzle today. Agree the spoonerism is a little iffy. But gives a good rhyming pair. COD for me is 17a. All in an unheard of 45 minutes. And does 7d respond to a post on last weeks 1a on social sciences? Neat.

I had the same issue with 19a. I can only think the third word in the clue is a misprint for a similar word which would have worked. It’s the same in the pdf and the app btw.

Re 19A I suspect Everyman will be growing most of the answer (minus the earl) by the minute! Expect a late correction to the online version once they start reading the forum posts.
Also, I'm having trouble parsing 12D even though there's only one possible answer. Can anyone shed some light?

Hi Phil. Sorry I can't. I had the same issue with what seems like a rogue letter but after my issues with 19a I decided to just accept it and move on :-)

12d parses as 2,9. The first five words of the clue can be read as this. Last two words are the defn. with ‘capital’ as in the first four letters of the answer

A good one today. Hopefully I have got the Spoonerism. Just on the Seb Coe thing. Coe would never have achieved what he did without the rivalry with Ovett and later Cram. It was a memorable time in British athletics.!

i'm not sure about 6a. if i have the right answer, i can't parse it.

i'm sure 19a is just an error.

6a is a word for conversation with one letter replaced by another. I had to think about which way it worked but a promise to pay later is the definition.
