...forgot to add: I'm definitely not a fan of 24A. Surely a better clue is out there somewhere? Not to worry; there's rarely a crossword without at least one clue that I don't approve of.

16a - Is an anagram but remember to add the C from Conservative.

23a - the nickname of a South coast football team minus it's last letter/'year out' and replaced by 2 "internationals" .

A good night's sleep has relaxed my stressed brain and I finished the crossword in a few minutes. Why didn't I get 7d before. So obvious!

I had got 19ac wrong and once I found the right answer thanks to your hint to Philo, I was able to fill in 17d (another obvious one) and 22ac. I realised early on that private was going to be a soldier, but I hadn't heard the answer before. So, my last one in was 20d. Thank goodness. Here's to an easier crossword next week.

I thought the crossword theme was entirely appropriate for the Guardian.

Hi -loved the crossword but stuck on 5D (which I think I have solved but can't parse) and 12A for which I have all letter intersections no idea how to approach! ... any pointers? ...thanks....

Just finished this extremely difficult puzzle. I don't always post but always follow your hints. Thankyou.
And I loved 10ac - laughed out loud when I got it.
I'm just stuck on 21down . I have A-M-D- and the only word that fits is to do with ships unless it's a name I haven't heard of. Also thought the A could be an L if I have 21 ac wrong.
Would be grateful for help. Definition would be useful.
