I
really don't understand how the first letters of the thematic characters are the last letters of synonyms of the second word of the message, as stated by Quisling in his recent post #203:
"SH, what that part of the preamble means is slightly different. Each character starts as the last letter of a synonym for the second word of the message spelt by the escaped letters. I’m character length order, the words are 3, 5 and 5 letters long. It’s one of the neatest touches in the puzzle"
I can't see the synonyms, and it all sounds far too complex;
In contrast, I recognise the first two words of the message as referring to a prominent list, headed quite explicitly with the first two words of the message, on the first page of chapter 1 of 'the work' - which specifies the identity and order of the thematic characters - nothing to do with positions in grid entries - but does order their b][appearance in the grid as stated.
Sometimes you just have to have the source material to hand.
