Thanks, but those hints are a bit too oblique for me, although of course I understand why they cannot be more explicit. I have been assuming the little bugger is sited in an area unoccupied by the other 6 but see a possibility from the world of literature below the five letter word. Could that be it ?

Mines above a six letter thematic of which I'm not convinced, but for which I don't see an alternative.

Pretty happy with it TBH. Chambers definition 6, and Bradford’s.

Thanks, hotelwhiskey7. I guess it has as much right to be there as a couple of the others😊

I had the same reservationas Bobbycollins about one of the six-letter items. It's in the Chambers thesaurus, but that's a weak justification. In general I think there are far more suitable thematic entities to replace the abstract nouns and the five-letter item.

I understand bobbycollins's hint now and think he/she - and hw7 - are probably right. However, having it in that position means the areas occupied by the words to be highlighted are one less than the number shared by the thematic name and hint (hence the assumption mentioned in my last post).

I think grid is full: a hint as to how to parse 20d (Pair changing up to race small boat), with I believe last two words providing definition, would be appreciated.

Find a six-letter word for pair and you should see how the answer works, specsaver
