I thought this was pretty hard, took me ages to get started.

I have an answer for 22D (a type of wine) which is a term for untidy hair without the first letter? Have I parsed that correctly?

I can't parse the last 2 letters of 18D even though it was my first one in (which I then cleared because I couldn't parse it, however all the crossers meant it must be correct). Seems to be too many words in the clue to parse easily!

Cheers. I think "for that" in 22D was what was throwing me off, I thought defn was first word but I see it is the first 2.

pauly, say out loud the lips (edges) of the word. but insert a conjunction inbetween them...

Weekend puzzle options: Buccaneer (aka Picaroon) with a gentle composition in the FT, Serpent with more of a challenge (including trademark musical Nina) in the Indy.

I got there in the end but it was a struggle and I made a lot of use of the quick solve feature on this site to help me. Thanks for the hints about the Latin phrase, that got me going after I only got about 3 unaided. Looking forward to a gentler Everyman tomorrow
