Well spotted Johnto, I completely missed that:-)

That (9) was another clue on which I burned a lot of time. Although I noticed the theme pretty quickly, I somehow neglected to think "thematically" on a number of pesky clues. Probably why I found the puzzle difficult , though lack of UK GK also contributed.

Same here Geeker, (I meant 9a, by the way, in response to Johnto's post) - makes me think what other partly themed connections I' might have missed.

I was following the game on the radio and it sounded brilliant - what with Fernandez missing a penalty and United hitting the woodwork twice, you must have been on the edge your seat:-)
