Strangely, Mr. 11 got really heavy US media coverage in the 1960s. As did the [spoiler alert] memorable 1966 event.
A longtime solver of British cryptic crosswords must develop a stockpile of UK GK in order to survive!

As Brendan says, a contrast to last week's 'beast' which took me multiple visits to finally crack.
FOI 3d followed swiftly by the linked 13 & 8.
Steady progress from then on but slowed slightly in NW corner with LOI 5a.

Enjoyable solve, thanks to both Brendans.

i started by making a correct leap in the wrong direction and convincing myself that 5a ended n(a)tion!
i solved 11 from 15 rather than vice versa.
mostly very good, but 9a is very loose, and pretty much unsolvable without crossers.
