Def is a 5 letter thematic word. It is listed 4 times in Chambers and in my edition it is the first of those listings.

I'm stuck with 11 across: even if one assumes "starting with" rules out the four-letter word itself, for which ????p? would fit, one still has ????k?=????h or ????v?=????y.

I've gone with the ????h as the ????y is what gives 35 down. In my 1998 edition of Chambers the latter is the first of 4 listings. In my later edition it is the third.

I'd agree, but to my mind it detracted slightly from an otherwise pleasing puzzle.

Hmmm. It’s dip dip dip or coin tossing time for 11a and 35d. Most unsatisfactory to be left on the horns of a dilemma right at the end.

Got there in the end. Having wrong Composer at 40A didn’t help! Agree with Alwayspuzzled. Have gone down same road. In my e-version of Chambers, the thematic from 35D is the third of four. Thanks for the heads up.

Rat, rifle, club, hut. Are you able to buy the physical version of Chambers over there in Canada? If not it must put you at a really great disadvantage.

Thank you alwayspuzzled. No, I've got no excuses, I have the 13th edition of Chambers which I probably bought after emigrating here from the UK in 1953 (before you were born!?)
I've never been a fan of Pabulum and this last effort of his confirms that opinion.
Anyway my grid is complete and I'll submit it (Send you the prize if I win!)
All the best
