8d What could be straw roof covering (4) ??L?

I’m thinking TILE and maybe there’s a type of Mahjong tile that’s called ‘straw’ but … not getting anywhere with that.

A very enjoyable puzzle from Pabulum.

Struggling to find the unclued 1 down, and can't find a match for 7 down. I don't submit so what the heck.

1 down - 4 letter material followed by a 6 letter geometric shape. The def is 7 letters.
7 down - second letter of the definition is normally U.
