The wordplay is the first 3 words, but it's the 3rd. letter that changes on insertion.

Can someone please help with 28A. I have D?S?E?S .Cheers.

The D is incorrect, and the third letter has been adopted from 15d.
The original word is an anagram.

Thanks for solving, all - as ever, fun to watch you wrestling. I set this over a year ago, so it was curious to see it revisited; there are a few things I wouldn't do now (that Spoonerism is highly dodgy, and androids dream of electric sheep, not live ones, which I should have noticed).
