Please remove Norah if this doesn’t belong. I haven’t been able to find a thread like this in this forum.

This is a place to post words or phrases that simply delight you as you discover them in Chambers (or elsewhere)

Here’s one I just found :)

“To dine with Duke Humphrey”

To go without dinner. The phrase refers to the story of a man who, while visiting the tomb of Duke Humphrey of Gloucester, was locked in the abbey—and thus missed dinner.
A: "Why are you so hungry? Didn't you eat dinner?" B: "No, I got stuck in a meeting, so I dined with Duke Humphrey!"

Hmm, perhaps this could be interesting, Bathmatters, I’m willing to give it a try to see what response you get.

petrichor

- from the Greek Petra (rock or stone) and ichor (the blood of the gods in Greek mythology)

I think ethereal is a beautiful word, and somehow onomatopoeic. Along similar lines, from my commonplace book which I have kept since I was 14, exquisite and quiescence.

Hello JG

Love Dining with Duke Humfrey! We have his library here in oxford

Hello Chris

I'm fine thank you and so far (TG as my mama would have said) escaped the plague.
I no longer enter clues, as many of those that are entered are way beyond me. I liked the Forum better 10 years ago. My grandson is nearly 12!!! I hope you're OK.

I like the expression "walking on eggshells", but more particularly in its Shakespearian form "My kingdom stands on brittle glass".

[Good to hear, Rosalind. No plague here either, though we have turned down an invitation to a family wedding in a couple of weeks - too risky, we think.]

Taghairm - inspiration sought by lying in a bullock's hide behind a waterfall.

I still havent found the word for if you are simply lying in a bullock's hide in a field :-)
