Can I ask about another item on RT 12

1d Clue is: "In competition with everyone when renting out" It is a 9 letter word . All I can think of is RIVALLING"

I have from other solved clues the letters ? i?a?l?n?

I presume that everyone is the "all" in the middle but cannot work out why the other letters of RIVING is an anagram of renting. The "out" I assumed to be the clue to it being an anagram



However I may be wrong in some or all of my assumptions

Riving and Renting both mean the same - tearing, splitting etc.

Yes thanks,that does explain it and does fully cover all the clues in my case which leaves me wondering still about the query that started this whole conversation.

Is there in fact some logical way to reconcile all the words in the clues for the answer to 13d and I and seemingly others here just haven't quite been able to see it rather than the compiler making a mistake in the way he/she formulated the clues ?

It certainly looked like a compiler error last week...

ChrisE, sorry - I hadn't noticed your earlier post, about riving meaning splitting, renting. I'd avoided answering the question when it was asked in the Duplicate thread - and then saw only the second page of this one!
