The only way I can reconcile all the clues is as follows:
Clowning is the word sought; imitation is a three letter word formed by the the first two letters of the answer plus the last letter of the answer. The clue to their positions is the word "about" ; the anagram is in fact "floor me" and the words "again" is the very flaky clue that floor me is an anagram. In this scenario the "to " is redundant
