Brendan, I realised after I posted that the top row + "song" leads to Mario Lanza and little else - and added a further comment that you also need to enter one of the thematic entries into the search to get what you need. Apologies for any confusion caused.

No problem, it's my fault for not reading your posts carefully enough. Thanks again Loge and thanks Lumen.

Found it, along with the composer! Hurrah. 😀

If I'd read the preamble correctly I'd have known the first lines came from both the silvered cells.

PS I've also learnt something new - one of Randy Crawford's famous songs is 5 letters not 4 - if you know what I mean 😉

I guessed the songwriter from the preamble - perhaps because of the reference to rhymes, for which the artist was notorious. There aren't many four-letter song titles, so the rest was relatively easy. One quibble, though - on the artist's official website, the word clued at 39A is deliberately misspelled, but the clue is to the correct spelling.

Another clever, demanding - but not overly so - puzzle. Enjoyed it, despite the subject leaving me (and, it seems, only me) completely cold.

Not just you, bubber. I find the stuff too smugly smart-arsed for my taste. Certainly of its time.

I have two of the thematics but bemused by what to enter at 1 & 2 down. Can't make sense of either and one of them will be thematic. Everything else sorted.
