12 - backwards (returned) 5-letter enclosure and first 3 letters of 4-letter container.

Thanks prospero. Surely the "enclosure" isn't enclosed? It's open on one side.

For completeness, my eighth was 9a. "Money" is loose; "foreign money" would be fairer.

I enjoyed most of this, but agree with some of Chrise's quibbles re some iffy clues.

I also have never seen that spelling of 1a, and can't parse the first two letters of the second word. Can anyone shed some light on that?

No idea about the 'good' in 4d either. The first two letters mean 'thus' surely, which would have worked just as well as a replacement for very good.

I do think that 26 could be a sensation though - in the body.

I also loved 14a and liked the pairing of 7 and 8.

I read those two letters as an abbreviation for a student collective or where they might meet. Support for this online if not in Chambers.

I also finished this in record time and echo the praise for 14 which gave me the biggest smile. I work at a university and we refer to the ‘XX’ as in the first two letters of second word in 1 all the time.

I did wonder whether the use of A rather than The Winter’s Tale was a deliberate switch to sneakily acknowledge the misdirection.

OK, thanks Jono and Drjax, but I still think that's a little bit iffy!

Drjax Agree re 14A. Indeed I took it as a rare act of generous direction (as opposed to misdirection) by the setter: 'Don't waste your time searching through a dramatis personae!'

Found it quite easy today and my favourite was also 14a. After I’d ploughed through lists of characters. Thanks Everyman for a break!
