So there was a Shakespeare theme after all. Alas, Philistine that I am, many of the references went over my head 😕

I wasn't too keen on the subtractive anagram part of 6D to be honest.

PDS
The letters are there in the right order, so I think it's OK.

I read it as over+indulge, with ‘over’ as the indicator that the subtraction is split

Mea culpa, I discounted the possibility of a Shakespeare theme because
one featured in Paul's Prize of just two weeks ago.

For those who have Chambers, does 3 have a strictly correct definition? I used Google to confirm my solution and one hit considers 3 "mounted infantry".

Also, Saturday's Indy has an excellent puzzle by Rodriguez (aka Picaroon in Guardian).

Hi Geeker, yes Chambers does support the ‘cavalry’ definition for 3. Thanks for the Indi recommendation, will check it out

I did better on this one than in recent weeks, though couldn't parse 12a until I read the forum. Also can't parse 4d - feel I must be missing something obvious as nobody else has mentioned that one. Can anybody set me straight?
(As a theatre lecturer, I'm embarrassed not to have spotted the theme!)
