One of those puzzles where I turned the air blue while solving the frustratingly elusive clues but was left with nothing but admiration when I'd finished. Is Check a new IQ setter? If so it's an impressive debut. I have zero interest in the theme elements but that didn't matter, and it's always satisfying to have grid changes result in real words, which cuts down the grid-staring, Also the endgame leaves no doubt, unlike some recent puzzles.

I didn't like the down clue starting Tear down... because for me the instruction "replacing one with another" doesn't quite work grammatically, even if the intent is quite clear. I'd have preferred the implied "one" at the end of the clue to have been present. But that's probably just me.

These clues are so tough!
Cold solved only about 12 so far.
I would love a steer on first across clue.
And definition for 2nd down? That might be enough for me!

First across is the usual abbreviation for US soldiers inside one of its alphabet-soup agencies (not CIA) all reversed. Def of 2nd down is the first word of the clue.

Hi Lumen,

4 letter "plane" as a verb meaning go high" around single letter "pilot's focus". The answer doesn't really look like it means landing but it's in Chambers.

Thanks as usual both.
Full grid, and I can see the bit in the middle.
Some of the three letter sets to get still. Onwards!

Hello!

I was late getting started on this one and am finding it much more of a challenge than this week's relatively simple Listener, so could someone give me a hint on the grid fill, please? I'm always out of my comfort zone with an unbarred grid and would like to know if there are two across clues in the top row - or if there's only one, then where does it start? And the same for row two?

If both rows contain two across words, then I've already cocked things up.

Thanks,
Suzannah x
