I understand and don't doubt that, as Malone says, this is a common name in Scotland, my only point is that with all the other examples, I can immediately cite a famous person with that name but, in the case of column 9, I can't think of a single person living or dead who's called that - this isn't a criticism and I only mentioned it in case I've actually got it wrong or have the wrong start/end point with the other part.

I didn't give the ninth column a second thought. We had a super-reliable papergirl of Scottish origin with that name.

Thanks, all. The column 9 name is far more familiar to me than the one in column 13. I know there's a famous/semi-famous person with that name, but I have never met or heard of another!

Having lived for many years in the Middle East, I know several people with that name. But I can't make sense of 19A - could someone please explain it?

Like luftmensch, I am baffled by 19a Trench beside a stream (3). S_A.

Unlike luftmensch, my penny hasn't dropped!

It's the last to do but none of the very limited possibilities seems to work. Grateful for any hints, thank you.

One of my crossword dictionaries gives sap as a synonym of trench, The a is extra.
