You give me too much credit. I read Troubled Blood quite recently so it was an easy spot. I had worked out a couple of the others but Jazzgirl was way ahead of me, as she usually is in these matters. Nice to see the estimable JKR get a mention!

I generally don't spend much time on the quiz threads because many of the clues are so open-ended there seems little point in attempting them (which is a high-handed way of saying I can't solve them). Hints probably are preferable to answers but I'm not sure it's possible for a lot of these quiz questions. As this is a crossword forum my personal preference would be for general knowledge quizzes to be kept to an absolute minimum, but no doubt I'm in a minority of one so my opinion can be safely ignored.

@Loge I have not read Troubled Blood, but all the others listed are on my bookshelves from my childhood and my father's childhood

I strongly recommend the Cormoran Strike series (of which TB is the fifth). They're well-written, gently-paced stories about a private detective some of which, I believe, have been adapted for the screen.

Yes, Loge, I think you are safe in saying your opinion will be ignored, I'm not going to monitor which Quiz to allow and which not.

However, I'm very interested in what you say about hints not being possible for a lot of Quiz questions. Are you saying it's far easier to give hints for crossword questions than it is for quiz questions? Why can't you give hints for Quiz questions.

A simple example for which I have given a hint. Surely this could apply to other quiz questions.

Question - A yellow river in Derbyshire

Hint - Think of a village on the A6 trunk road

PS - We've digressed away from Save the Children Quiz but the original questions have been answered so I don't think it matters.

Amber? Had to use Google for that one!

I find cryptic clues generally lend themselves to hints easily - give a synonym or example of the definition and explain how the wordplay works by reference to elements in the clue (e.g. anagram of A containing last letter of B + abbreviation for C). No doubt many GK quiz answers can also be hinted at by giving a synonym of the answer, but as I've said some of the semi-"cryptic" quiz clues are vague and often the answers given are suggestions rather than confirmed answers. This is certainly true when the answers are phrases or sayings and no enumerations are available, as we've had in the past. It's hard to hint at something when you're not sure of the answer yourself.

But as stated above, I don't visit the quiz threads very often so it's not my call and my opinion can once more be safely ignored :)
