Anyone made headway with the endgame? Enjoyed the fill but now in grid staring mode. Again. 🤔

Not figured out the final placement yet but the nine treated answers are all names, in full and in short.

I've done it all apart from finding the 8 letters in the grid.

Yes, but it took a while to see it. It all works out neatly although if I have the business with the ninth unclued correct, it's based on the setter's opinion (and those who share it) rather than anything factual.

Sounds like a GWIT? Not sure of the relevance of the number of the 9th either but can see a 5-letter word in the grid I could apply to it!

I’m not sure the number of the ninth has any relevance (at least I can’t see any). I think the placement has more to do with the letters in its vicinity.

I'll give it another stare later. I thought I'd worked out what the - last two words of the extra letters - is, but it's a bit of a shot in the dark.

Got it now...hmm, not bowled over by it I have to say! Also, think the treated answer is 3 letters short?

There’s a 3-letter version too (usually preceded by “The”) and it does say “in short”.

I’m no fan of the entry but nor am I convinced that wishful thinking on the part of the setter is really playing ball!

Yes, fair enough as it looks like there are no words that can be made from the longer version or the other name
