i seem to have 2 alternatives for the unclued on the top row...both give the required .....??

I could only see one rather obscure example - ditto the rather obscure example in the down unclued entry it crosses.

Yes, that's right, xwordfan - I think your pluralised variation might be dubious (but I've seen it done before).

Same dilemma. I've gone for the dwellings - Chambers doesn't give the other one

Oh dear! I have a pretty much full grid plus the names spelled out by the extra letters and the obvious work it implies but I'm having a real hard time correlating that with the unclued words (with the exception of the one in the 11th column which is a word in the work in question and Chambers isn't really helping - are they all in there?

Brendan, think of what the first word of the two word phrase, that precedes 11 D, could mean in a crossword context....
