Thanks, after reading the hints I managed to complete the puzzle. Likely the first Genius I've ever finished (at most the second).

That was a pleasant diversion. It can be a tricky device to use given regional variations, but it all seemed to work. Was 22 a bit of a stretch? It seemed to require a stress on the final letter of the entry which I think of as silent.

I think 22 works fine but is the letter count in the clue right? Should it not be 4?

I took the numbering to be for the entry, not the original solution (cf 29).

I've got the wordplay in 29 leading to a 4 letter word, with a 5 letter word entered in the grid. Surely that's the device for all the acrosses?

Sorry, 6 letter word entered in the grid.

29 wordplay 5 letters, entry 6; 4 wordplay 7 letters entry 6; 11 wordplay 10 letters entry 9. letter count is always for the entry, not the solution

I think we are both saying the same thing, just phrasing it differently!

I think we are. I'm sorry, for some reason or other, I got fixated on 22ac being wrong. For 29ac though, by my reckoning the wordplay leads to a 4 letter word.

no - 29 is a reversal of word for veto (3 letters) + abbreviation for books (2 letters)
