I sometimes have the same problem accessing the Listener. The secret is to log out from the main Times site (even if you are logged in!). Then once you have logged in again the access denied message doesn’t appear. It is a nuisance, but this work round has been successful for me every time. They must have a very strong paywall!

Foinaven, wasn’t your namesake hill briefly a Munro (the first Hamish Brown list?). A pal of mine who was then in the Grampian Club was part of the group that was sent to check and who declared that Foinaven was, indeed, just under 3,000 feet above sea level. I began my career in JMCS as a bagger but soon got seduced into rock and ice climbing.

I've had the occasional "Forbidden" page for crosswords if I'm logged out of the main Times site, irrespective of whether I'm logged into Crossword Club or not. Logging back into the Times banishes the unwelcoming message. I've never tried accessing the Listener via the app.

Looks like an interesting puzzle and Little Hare is an excellent setter - but after tonight's beers this will have to wait until tomorrow.

All done apart from the parsing of 26. I know which letter to move, and I know the last two letters, but the unch at the beginning is eluding me. If my letter-move is right then it looks like a double def, but if so I can't work out the first element. A hint sought. (But apart from that, a very fine puzzle.)

I've posted a hint on the answers thread, Cockie.

I've just completed my full grid, 35a being my LOI. I was really worried about my "moved letters" until I realised that he could never spell correctly. I found those letters to be devilishly devious, but all were very fair once I had resolved the paring of the answers. - 22d had me puzzled for ages. Now my weekly nemesis, the end game, awaits - even though I know the relevant statement from the quatrain

Gitto. Same as you. Full grid, know the next line. Just not sure now whether to use scissors or just try and shuffle each row’s letters. A bone of contention indeed

This two thread malarkey is upsetting two schools of solvers. Those who want to help but don't want to see answers posted (as per a very lengthy debate recently) and those who just want direct answers. In the past, when there was a single post, all queries were in one place, the spirit of the thread was NOT to give answers but generous hints and tips abounded. NOW, the no answers thread is barely used and those wishing to encourage those on the other thread do so but respect the spirit of not giving direct answers. This simply frustrates (and quite rightly so because of the name of the thread) some contributors. I think it was suggested that one thread should be "discussion only" and the other "hints, no answers". In their current form I will, in future, be deterred from contributing to the answers thread as I do not agree with supplying answers, otherwise it would be pointless for JG compiling annual statistics if everyone solves all puzzles. I DO recognise the frustration of not completing a crossword, but without that I don't actually see the point of doing one.

Gitto. Like you I prefer not to see answers, nudges are ok.
Why could the threads not be opened until, say, the Sunday after publication? Surely solvers could at least give the puzzle 24 hours and let things mull over? Just a thought.

Agree with Gitto and SimpleSimon that hints are preferable to direct answers. Gitto's suggestion of the threads entitled "Discussion only" and "Hints, no answers" would solve the matter of people demanding answers and referring to the thread title as justification for doing so?
