THOSE for the first one, Gooner. This is THOSE (the people there) with "E" moving to the front.
SCENT for the second one (sounds like SENT)

15a More than one clever chap scratching head for hours, and 17d Would-be setter, not about to join rave. I think the answers are Ages, and Aspirant, but can't parse them. Help would be appreciated.

15 Sages, clever chaps, scrapping head - remove the first letter, Ages.

17 Aspic = setter (horrible jelly stuff)
C = about, circa, Latin, a crossword favourite.

Not about = drop the C, so Aspi

Very good Malone, I was scratching my over that one. Setter as a glue is a nice change to the usual ‘dog’ or a ‘self-reference’ by the compiler

Thanks, Jono. I was pretty chuffed when I saw Aspic, setter, today - I hadn't yesterday when I did the puzzle! I often just shove in the correct answers because they're correct - it's not a totally good system.
