Yes, malone@10, I did much the same and saw aspic very late and after I had finished the crossword. There was a red herring with 're' (another 'about') making 'aspire' which doesn't work.

Looks like 'accomplish'.

3d Hits back, crushing Conservative successor (5).

Scion fits.

If you're a bit schloshed, you might pronounce accomplice as accomplish.

The other one is No 1s (hits as in pop songs) reversed around C
