Not sure what’s going on here. I’ve got the author but can’t make any sense of the preamble regarding the top and bottom rows.
I’ve got a possible anagram of a character by another author, but it doesn’t tie in with anything else.

Very gentle hint would be welcome, thank you.

Cloverjo, I think you're on the right lines. The character is really the theme, it's the author bit, the one that we have to highlight, that's a slight side issue.

Cloverjo, I might have been less helpful than I intended! The description, top row, of your character (bottom) is what led to the author, who 'used the theme'... later. Hope that's of use.

Macavity, thanks, glad I could help. There are helpful people on here, but not everyone sees all the papers, crosswords. I don't do the Guardian puzzles, for example, so I like it when clues appear on the Forum and I get the chance to have a bash!

Malone @8, and all the cleverer because every other “feature” is in the grid.

I was wondering why there is no mention of the Chambers Dictionary this week!

As always my word search for the author is proving futile. I am also unsure about the unchecked letter in 1 across. I can see the 'sound-alike' starting at 4 across but can't think of anything which would go in front of that. I assume that 47, 48 and 49 across form an anagram. Back now to grid staring.
