please ignore my last post (no 10). Copies eventually turned up at my newsagent, so problem solved.

A very different challenge to last week.

Note by Admin - I have been notified that parts of this post give away too much for the 'No Answer' thread so I have moved the content to the 'Answers' thread.

Smithsax, this is meant to be the thread which gives away very little! It was disappointing to see details of the theme being spelled out, especially as no-one had even asked for help of any kind.

PS I'm not the Listener police, I'd just hate anyone's enjoyment of the puzzle to be spoiled.

I have filled the grid apart from a few entries in the NW and SW quadrants. Subtracting the number of misprinted clues from the total number of clues yields 5 clues with an extra word. Adding this to the number of letters in the name gives me nowhere near 17. Where have I gone wrong?

Contendo you haven't gone wrong! Yes there are five redundant words but to achieve the total of 17 you need to read the preamble very carefully indeed

Thanks dsc, got it now. Now for the remaining gaps. I must annotate my Bradford to include that Scottish island.

Contendo, you too are giving away information in this thread...Why tell people there are precisely 5 such clues?

Since you posed a question in this way, your post belongs in the other thread.

Well, that was delightful. A very strong debut (j presume). Clues were generally of a very high standard i thought and about 5 made me laugh.

Having the replacement letters in the definition is a tricky thing to pull off successfully (I'm 2/3 of the way through something similar on a puzzle I am currently setting, and I'm finding it very challenging). And an unambiguous 5 minute endgame.

Very good indeed.

I agree that this was elegant, amusing and very well constructed - the clues, the extras, the grid, the endgame and the misdirection were all excellently done. Thank you, Mira.
