Many thanks for your hints to ap - I took advantage of them to complete it. Interesting idea to have 4 jigsaws in one. I haven't seen it before. I suppose it was one of the easier ones, but I enjoyed it.

Grunger, thanks. It was quite hard to give 'hints' as I didn't want to spoil the 'ah, there you are' moments!

Spearman raged uncontrollably (5)

I've looked on Wiki under "notable people called Spearman" and there's quite a list but my answer, an obvious anagram, isn't one of them. Who is he?

He's the only anagram of raged that it's in the Chambers "some first names" appendix.

Thanks Gabriel but I'm confused as to why the clue specifies "Spearman" - could it be Smith or Jones or any other surname?

that's the meaning of his name indeed in the appendix.

Chambers does indeed say that Edgar means spearman but I have so far been unsuccessful in finding the dictionary's justification for that.

Gar means spear, as in garlic. But what about the Ed ("ead" originally) bit? It means blessed, prosporous, worthy etc. Are spearmen so? Someone who wielded a spear in battle would have been called an eadwiga.
