From the lack of comments/queries on this I think I must be the only one struggling. I have all 4 sets of answers and have tried every combination at least 3 times but nothing is leaping out at me either vertically, horizontally or diagonally. I assume that the two straight lines cross. Could somebody please nudge me in the right direction by telling me which set of answers go in the N-E and S-W quadrants or in the N-W and S-E quadrants. Back now to try to piece together the jigsaw.

Alwayspuzzled, I no longer have all the bits, but the top left has a synonym for 'wise' as its first entry. The straight lines cross at their ends.

Thank you for that Malone. It will give me something to work on. From what you say I think I am looking for 2 eight letter straight lines with the last letter common to both.

Thanks for that confirmation Son1of rover1. I have created all the possible grids but still cannot see anything. I will leave it until tomorrow then look at it again but I suspect that I have an answer wrong somewhere.

Now totally stymied on this. I have looked for 8 letter words in every possible combination of quadrants but cannot find a pair with the last letter in common which meet at that letter or very few 8 letter words for that matter. Word searches have always been one of my many Achilles' heels.

Alwayspuzzled, sorry to hear you're still hunting down the words. Both of them (well, in their longer versions) are mentioned in your first post, around the middle. The first word has four letters in that grid with the 'wise' synonym.

PS Just a reminder - 'Straight' doesn't always mean up or down in crossword terms...

Thank you again Malone. That did the trick. Miscopying from my rough version to the jigsaw pieces I was using didn't help.
