This is quite intricate. Took me some time to decipher the theme which I hadn't heard of but am glad I have now! I'm left with one letter I'm not certain of: the first of 18d. I can see two alternatives, but am tending now towards the mechanised rather than the feathered option. Or...?

Thanks to the Big Dave blog I see that the setting team are apologising for an error in clue 6 down, where MINUS should be PLUS.

Only once I’d had the pdm did I recall that my grandson had a temporary attachment at the residence and had met the eminent thematic subject.

15a - Caught off man’s iron from St Andrews (4)

My answer is a Scottish word for "iron" but the wordplay seems to be suggesting that if I add a C to it I'll get a word for "man" - instead I get a word for a heap of stones or a terrier. Have I got the wrong word?

Brendan, I too had wondered about that - but Bradford's lists Cairn under Man, so it must be justifiable somehow! I know that's not terribly informative, but it takes a little of the puzzlement away.

Apologies for giving that answer away!

Brendan, I rechecked Chambers and the answer is given under Man.
