Enjoyed this. Happily guessed the shading part of the end game once the other words appeared, so no grid staring. Hurrah!
Spotting the 'hidden' words was helped by the fact that, not long ago, they seemed to be a permanent fixture on Radio 4 (and I didn't like them at all!).

Hello!

I'm rather enjoying this one and have three-quarters of the grid filled, but I'm struggling to complete the top left corner. Please, could I get a hint for 1a? And is there only one clash in the grid?

Thanks,
Suzannah

Hi Suzannah,

1a - The 'pop group' is a British band from the 80's followed by 3 letter "look" reversed/"retro" - the series is alphabetical and is what you learn in infant school.

Thanks Brendan. I did guess the group and I even joined it with the right retro look at one point, but it didn't seem like a real word at the time. But now it makes sense!

Thanks Suzannah,

I must admit, it did prompt a visit to YouTube for a bit of nostalgic listening:-)

I wouldn't have said the hidden words were an eponym. Is it just me?

Spent a good part of yesterday battling through this and have it completed, except for the colouring. Any hints on what creates the 'thematic background'? Probably obvious but can't see it.

Bubber, look at where the works are set, and think of something that might represent it?
