I had a problem with the second set initially. There are two ways of seeing the clue re-ordering. In one case all the orders except the second set work out. The other way of looking at it matches the second set and all the others.

I plodded through this wondering if I’d make it to the endgame at all. Then, the pdm happened and it was all wrapped up - brilliantly constructed, thank you Vismut.

I agree Jack, this was a brilliant construction. The reservations I expressed earlier about the endgame were down to me being thick rather than any fault of the setter.

A mate's Dad (who was a lovely bloke) was a keen practitioner of the theme and I think that by the time he died a few years ago, he'd done it in pretty much every possible venue in the country. He'd have loved this puzzle and I wish I could have called him for help!

The last sentence of the instruction says that only three unclued entries are not real words. What about the new 6 down?

Malone and SS, am I missing something? Without giving too much away, I have the last cell of 18 across and 6 down as a “special” cell. Is this the right cell?
