Hi Prospero, tiny hint(s). Said O word is themed and 'wrong' is in the legal sense.

and ... sorted out the O word! That was a sweat - and not really a hugely enjoyable one. I can see why this thread is filled with giving-uppers, but some of us are dogged enough to plod on ...

It is unhelpful that the place we’re told to start the perimeter isn’t the start of the sequence. I can see that many will dislike this, because some of the theme answers will only be known to obsessives like me. It still wasn’t easy; grids like this make the jigsaw element hard work and I went wrong several times. I am one (the only one?) to give a big thumbs up, though I was disappointed I wasn’t one of the theme answers!

I had to admit defeat with the inquisitor today so was pleased to have a theme puzzle to download and print out from the guardian . Took a while but it did all fit together as the rubric said - quite satisfying. As not a fan of the work I didn’t mind the ‘ order’ being wrong and just amazed that Maskarde got it to work . Haven’t come across this setter before- but thanks for a fun challenge.

Re the O word. The bark is the outside of a tree and wrongs can be civil.

I've got the theme and over half of the theme words. Still struggling with where to the four parts around the perimeter. By the 'top right' do you mean the last square in the first row?

lizw: I started at the last square in the 4th row. That gave me the 4 components in order.

Finished, eventually. Very enjoyable, and now my knowledge of classical music has increased!
Thank you Maskarade

I came late to this (that's my excuse anyway). I've done lots of individual clues but haven't even begun to think where to put them and haven't any idea what the theme is. M says it's one of the two word clues. I have the A two-worder, the D hyphened one, the G one, the 2 - 4 O one and it doesn't seem to be any of those. Is it the petrified wood which I haven't yet got? Or the Such drinks are a sell out? Could some-one point me in the right direction, please? Also, I have a Cheshire town which begins with a synonym for Grandma but can't parse any of the second syllable. Someone said the excited builder and Heed girl were thematic and they would seem to be anagrams but not ones that come up in my Wordsolver program. Proper nouns perhaps? All help gratefully accepted.
