not sure I've nailed this although I now have a solution. Would I be right
in assuming that after 11 clashes are resolved six cells adjacent cells are inscribed similarly?

I'm not sure quite what you mean, Aspria, but surely the final stage after resolving the clashes involves more than six cells?

that's what I'm worried about. I just noticed something thematic in the two obviously short clues and added to them to giving a certain effect - but by no means sure

Drxx's post at 2 nails it nicely without giving too much away. When you enlarge (or consolidate) the duplicates you get something thematic that cryptically represents one of the alternative names. Hope that helps without being too spoilerish!

It took me ages to see what was happening at 38 & 39 across - a real doh moment!

Both have me stumped, even with hints from this forum and bigdave44. I guess each is thematic so my crossers are of little help?
