I would have thought they're symmetrical in themselves rather than in the grid, ginge.

Despite all the helpful hints in this thread I still cannot find the second element. I have tried all manner of inverted Us but to no avail. A nudge in the right direction would be appreciated.

alwayspuzzled - your final sentence is a clue in itself!

Hi drxx, indeed; I intended writing in themselves within the grid but after a few typos and miscorrections ... I'm glad it didn't put aspria off. Not a good day at the office.

Thanks Cockie. I have been looking in that general area but still can't see anything. I will go back to it tomorrow when I have cleared my mind.

Still hunting for the elusive second element and now suspect I have something wrong in the grid. Back to the drawing board.

alwayspuzzled - if you have the correct name for the second element, its final letter only appears twice in the grid.

Thank you for that drxx. The problem is that I don't have the name and trawling through lists of that particular feature for various countries is yielding nothing. I will keep looking.

I hope you're not looking too far and wide, alwayspuzzled - I'd say it was the least obscure element in the puzzle (and quite a bit smaller than I was expecting).
