Help please with the 2nd element....If i knew how many letters?/what does it start with? that may help....

The second element has eight letters and begins at 18 across.

Thank you ...but i need 9 letters (or longer if some of the other cells are in it). I have 30 cells so far for the other 5. The Brazil one is no good as that would leave me 2 short too..??

Ah, I understand. Yes, it has nine cells and none of them forms part of another element. It is the right shape for the element you need.

Element 2 is the most famous one over on the right ...9 letters in an upside down u
element 3 doesn't cross it if you choose the correct 6 letters ....element 3 is the unsymmetrical one i think....

Hi bunty, I agree that element 3 is not symmetrical regardless which of the possibilities is chosen as the 4th letter of the distinct 6 but is element 6 also not symmetrical ? An error in the preamble?

ginge ... i have that element in a circle of 8 letters making it symmetrical ??
the final letter can be in 2 places....

Oops bunny, quite right. For some reason convinced myself 1 letter wouldn't be involved in 3 elements so chose an alternative last letter. Note to self, must read preamble correctly. Cheers.

Making a right mess of this after a speedy grid fill. I have four of the elements but am hampered by not being sure from the superfluous letters if there are 4 superfluous letters in the first element 9 on the next, or if it's 5/8. If it's the latter, then elements 1 and 2 are related, but there can't be an extra letter in 14 to make what I want to make it . Also there are so many element 4s in the area that you don't know where to start. Also does symmetrical mean in themselves or in the grid.....

Hi aspria the elements are (5), (8), (5), (8), (6) & (4) and in each case are provided by consecutive clues with at least 1 "normal" clue between each of them.
Symmetrical in the grid.
