Hi drxx, I wasn't clear was I? (:o(

I meant that the word that appears is changed (from one word to another, shorter one, that means the same. Rather than referring to the answers in the grid.

(As I say, if I have things right).

Thanks, granama1 - I knew what you were getting at but thought it could possibly mislead.

Can anyone please help with parsing of 35a? I have the definition via a misprint, but can't make sense of the wordplay.

I believe I'm all done - as others have said, the end game feels a bit uncertain. I've turned a 4 letters into a 3-letter synonym - does that fit with everyone else?

I’m afraid I’m way behind some of you. I have the character, but I don’t see the extensive thematic effect after changing one letter. Nudges please!
Thanks

Dylan:

'Extensive' is really a bit of wordplay here. If you have the quotation from the misprint letters, that should show you what needs to be removed to make the quotation true. Think about the consequence of patently untrue statements on the character...

You beat me to it, quiz. I was going to point out that taking 'extensive' literally had me frantically 'Ferreting' all over the grid for some long clue to the last hurdle, only to realise eventually that the compiler was using the word in a cryptic reference to the theme.
I'm happy now that zabadak (#27) refers to the same two letters to be replaced up with I came!
