...and the penny drops!

Thanks again everyone. Also to Vismut, I enjoyed the solving.

Yes, I enjoyed it too. I think it's a very well constructed puzzle (with a very neat thematic twist).

Haven't seen you on the Listener threads for ages, Drxx. Are you still solving them? Or perhaps you're fed up with many of us relying on you for help...

Yes, still doing them loge - I didn't enjoy the last one.

The Listener threads seem to have found the right balance for the regulars - I look in on them but the help is plentiful without any input from me (I'm not too keen on the 'official' thread, though - it's a bit too like the AB thread for my liking).

All done, except that I just don’t see how 26a works. I realise there’s a clash, which I’ve resolved.
Can anyone shed any light?

Four letter word for "one" (noun) + central letter of Powderham

Thanks for getting back, Drxx - sorry for late reply!

What an absolute gem! My wife disagrees with Vismut’s choice, even though born this side of the border.

I understand Granama's confusion about the last part of the preamble. I was confused myself. "Perhaps controversial" muddies the waters. Unless the setter's preference doesn't conform to the area where she lives then why might it be considered controversial. As we don't know in which of the two areas she lives we cannot tell whether her preference is controversial or not.

I came late to this - why does real life get in the way of doing crosswords? I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it elegantly done. Can’t agree with murky; there is[/] a controversy about the order of ingredients. And the reconciliation of clashes clearly indicates on which side of the line Vismut is. My only problem with the puzzle is that, having completed it, I was unaccountably compelled to go and purchase certain items…..
