Thank you Brendan and Bunty for getting me over the finishing line.

I have a full grid, and characters in rows 3, 5 and 11 totalling 23 cells. This means I need a 5 letter character which will encompass alterations in 29 Down and 30 across. Leaving real words by using only the letters of the region, 29D must be a town in Germany or a boy's name. At this point I'm struggling. I guess what I'm really saying is, I know the nationality and profession of a 5 letter person in the middle of row 8, but I can't locate his/her name with Google by substituting random letters from the region.
Furthermore, although I realize what the exact message from the extra letters must be, I can't get past a K for 13 down and a W for 36 Down. Help!

29 down is the German tow and first letter of the name. I found it by using Universal Crossword Solver using the letters which I knew had to be included.

Thanks, Alwayspuzzled, with your help, I got there in the end and eventually found I could control the urge to respell words which needed a reduction, or reduce words which needed a re-spelling.. e.g. I spent the whole puzzle almost with K as my letter at 13 down, PROW = P+RANK, not, as it should have been, P+RA(n)G = P ROW, and W as my letter at 36 Down H ARM = H(ard) + WING, but it should be H(ard) + RIG. I also forgot there would be a few normal clues.
