I’ve been struggling to fully parse my solution to a cryptic clue from an old DM (15470). To save more brainfog, can anyone shed further light on it, please?

Clue: As some old buildings English cardinal suggested at last? (4-8)

Solution: Half-timbered

All I’ve got is that English cardinal is ERED and that is HALF of TIMBERED

Half of timbered is ERED which could be E(nglish) + RED (cardinal is a shade of red). I think "at last" indicates it's the second half of timbered you're looking at.

Wonderful! I got so caught up in various parsing bits & pieces, one of them being that “suggested at last” might be the final “d” of the answer, thus ruling out the e (english) red (cardinal) that was my first thought. Sometimes it’s good to walk away!

Thank you so very much, it’s good to have found this forum!

Can I have some help parsing this clue

Intended to be seen in torn clothing

I have raiment.

I get intended= ment. But where does the rai come from or am I on the wrong track completely ?

Hi Rog,

I think it might be "intended" = AIM in "torn" = RENT

Just wondering, Rog62 - did the clue have 'Intend' rather than 'Intended'? The former works for the answer, but the tense would be wrong in the latter.

Hi Rog,

C is an abbreviation for the Latin "Circa" meaning 'about'.

This is well worth remembering as it crops up very frequently in cryptic crosswords.
