It might help to read from the bottom up.

Chambers doesn't help with some of the thematic entries - and there are some unlikely canditates but they're easily searchable (the one you're unsure of is part of a hat).

I’m so impressed some people have nearly finished! I have just eight confident solutions, some vague ideas, no idea of the theme. Could some kind soul please give me a substantial hint to 1ac, which would give me an entry into the NW corner?

1A : I tried the six letters to be anagrammed, plus one other, and tried them all!

Of the recent crop of themed puzzles, I think it’s fair to say that this one takes the biscuit.

phew! Got there at last ... and, yes, it is v clever - still don't get the plummets from heading up bit, though.
