golly, this is tough. If Nana is the dog, I can arrive at a phrase meaning just met but don't understand undressing the girl .... in fact most of the NW corner is a mystery at the moment!

The "girl I've just met" comes from a song in a musical (the actual quote is "I've just met a girl called...") and undressing means removing the outer letters. Hope that helps!

34a - The instrument Eric Clapton originally put back in case

My answer for this has all but the last letter given by wordplay, but Chambers has 2 different spellings and it's the final letter that's changes so I don't know which one to use - have I gone wrong somewhere?

..... also - this is my last clue and I've already spent an age on it ...

26a - English city's head is backing one of those in Eastern Europe

I have all the crossers and there aren't too many words that fit - there is one that has a 4 letter "Eastern European" but, if that's it, what is the definition?

well I have answers that will fit for everything except 23 and have highlighted the unclued letters but still not an inkling as to what's meant ... some of my solutions (9 in particular) are pretty iffy in terms of matching the definition .... am assuming Nana is the Australian term entioned in Chambers.
