Maybe, to put you more in the picture what i have.
I have the answer to a simple ten letter clue which is “ IRRIGATION ”
we have ten Linkwords to solve
In each of those link words , we have to pick out one letter that is a part of the answer to the clue. in this case IRRIGATION you put the letter in a shaded square
I will show you what i have done so far with the letters instead of shaded but with a CAPITAL

Thanks for such a comprehensive reply, Rays. Much appreciated. So I understand, for Irrigation to be correct you need an I and a G from the sandwich and air clues? Do they have to be the fourth letter of the sandwich clue and the second letter of the air clue?

So that means the missing word contains a G, irrespective of whether the eighth one is finger or pistol. What position in the word does this letter appear? If it's the final letter I suppose it could be sandwich (MAKING) off, though that's not convincing.

The missing letter in "sandwich" is the fourth letter along
it could be a "G" which would solve the puzzle, if not, maybe change
of the other linkwords
The clue by the way was " The supply of water to land'
they are not usually as easy as that one

The third one could be bar (MAGNET) fishing (magnet fishing has its own Wiki entry). That means the sandwich one is ***I**, and that supports Quisling's suggestion of STRIKE. There do seem to be some quite obscure (to me) terms involved in these puzzles!

I wondered about Magnet as well, Loge. The G seems the hardest letter to place anywhere. But I take it that if it is Magnet and Strike, the second letter of the Air clue must then be an N, or something else needs to be changed. Unless I’ve misunderstood (quite probable)

You're right, Quisling. I can't see anything better than the answers already given, so back to the drawing board...

SPONGE? I believe a sandwich sponge is a type of cake?

i agree it is obscure at times, but if you change the linkword to "magnet" you will need to put the "N" to Sandwich _ _ _ N _ _ OFF
otherwise you lose "N"

Excellent, Loge. So ma G net, spo N ge, p I stol. Certainly the most plausible combination yet, to my eye anyway
