Hi Aslac,

4d - Your theory re parsing is spot on so if you put 'stan......' into an anagram engine (I did it in Chambers app) and remove 'dol....' it will give you the answer.

Aslac, Google brought it up immediately.

Brendan, I think Aslac had the answer - from removing letters - but couldn't confirm it as being valid?

Got it. Sorry about that Aslac - not for the first time today I misread something - time for a coffee break I think:-)

Brendan apologies - I have just realised that Aslac might have formed the letters into some other plausible looking word! The answer itself is a pretty common word, used quite often - so I didn't really consider any other combination of the letters.

Common!!! Quoi?? I'll take your word for it that it is in Scotland but I guarantee you it isn't when you're south of the Watford gap:-)

Yes, Brendan, common in Scotland, it's such a lovely, evocative word! I'd say I hear it used about once a week.

I must admit I've never heard the word in conversation, not even when I used to visit a friend who lived in Aberdeen some while ago. It's a lovely word and I'll try to get it into conversation as much as possible - though I no longer live in the UK and don't get to speak English very often, so that may be rather difficult!

Hi Malone and everyone. This is just to say how much I value the support I get here, and the encouragement to persevere especially now with the endgames. I have persevered and improved, so for the last few weeks Inhave managed on my own (to my great joy), so I am saying to Pompey - don’t give up.
And, Malone, I found that funny word, but don’t have an idea how to pronounce it!

Thanks, Jogamel - and great to know that you've had the great joy of solving unaided!

I'm afraid I can't give much of a pronunciation guide to that funny(lovely) word - I have tried, but came up with nothing.
