My last cell to be filled is causing me grief. Assuming I have 9 down and 13 across correct (dangerous I know), the third letter of 9d and the first of 13a needs changing. However, this leaves me with six possible letters which fit. A parse of 9d and 13a might help my sanity.

13a - double definition "without water" think drinks/spirits and it's also a "cow"

I'm still left with 6 possibles, if I lose the last letter of 9d, and 4 possibles if I lose the fourth letter. Unless there's something in the preamble I'm missing.

By some fluke I have managed to fill the grid and make the necessary changes to the 3 and 4 letter entries. Malone's guidance and Brendan's confirmation of that will I hope make it 'easier' to identify the letter which needs changing. Time now to do my homework on the subject.

This is a subject about, I have realised, I know nothing!
Could someone please confirm my understanding?
Am I correct in believing that in order for the 'dating' to occur, a seven letter word must become a six letter word due to it having lost an eight letter word?
