I'm not sure about the scientific world in general but all school-level chemistry books and exam papers converted some years ago to the use of sulfur, sulfate, sulfuric etc.

What is the old model in 4d (NONESUCH)?

I am unable to see an answer for 53ac: I perform myself, mostly, sort of light opera. I have I - - - E - E - (which could be I - O - E - E - if 39d is TEST DROVE).

IDOMENEO ( I DO ME NEOn)

I'm not sure what your chemistry comment refers to, but the F spelling for sulfur and compounds is recommended in science too, though it hasn't necessarily caught on. Indeed, an august publication such as New Scientist still frequently uses names that were replaced 50 years ago (acetic acid, for example).

Still struggling with a few of these, what is the MD theme running through it ?

For 43a I have
- - - / Thousand Five Hundred
What is the first word please ?
(Clue, MD a is American with VC, I however must come first)

I am finding this crossword boring atm, get nowhere mostly, and don’t follow the reasoning behind the parsing, and find it unamusing when I do get it !

Ta, folks !

Hi Chrise.
Thanks for the explanation.
My comment about sulphur etc. was simply stimulated by the answer (forgotten which clue) where the spelling was done with ph.
