Just 12a left to parse . Any help welcome

I have worked out that 3d is an animal, but have been unable to track it down. I have an answer ending in W, but it just doesn't parse with the rest of the wordplay. And I now know that my answer for 15ac was wrong.

I've now got 16d, but but it has thrown 16ac off. Ah, just got it, though only through google as it is a word I don't know.

More hints for 2d and 12ac would help.

I thought it was dead good, but it might not have passed Brendan's test for a smooth surface.

12a: defn "extra"; 1 (last letter of thematic word) + 5 (cut).

Oops, make that 4 (cut)...

Sorry, I'd given up and gone to bed. I got them both (why I didn't get them before is a mystery to me - I'm blaming the blow on the back of my head when I fell over in the garden on Thursday).

I've sort of finished now, but I hated this crossword.
