Mrs Munch there are lots of hints here, I used them to finally get 20,23 which was my last solve. It’s something of a custom to report on progress and how we fared, which I know can sometimes be frustrating if the answers are still elusive.

It’s no help but the daily Guardian comments under the cryptic are far worse! I struggle through a crossword taking hours, needing google etc, and then read comments saying “too easy” “finished before the kettle boiled” etc. It can sometimes be frustrating, no-one likes a smart arse and all that.

What’s great about this forum is that, if stuck, you can come here for help and first of all get a gentle nudge, then if still stuck you can come back again and get even more of a shove towards the answer, usually without having the entire thing spelled out for you. This preserves a sense of achievement as fully spoiled answers are rarely given.

If you want a hand with anything then by all means ask away.

I'm really late today and very stuck. It takes ages to read through the thread! But thanks for the help. I think I've got the theme from 21d, 1d and 10ac, but I haven't got 20, 23 yet or 14d.

I was busy all morning and went to my daughter's this afternoon for tea and cake to celebrate her birthday tomorrow, so only got back at 6.30pm. I managed to solve a couple after lunch, and have got a few more. Perhaps a hint for some non themed clues will help.

How about 18ac (8) and 21ac. I have D???/G?E?? for 21ac, but am not sure about the G. What is 17d about? I'm no cockney, so I don't know 19, 25. Again a clue would be helpful. Many thanks to whoever mentioned Lonnie Donegan. I'm old enough to remember him!!.

Hi Roof,

18a - 3 letter cricket term for "on" + 3 letter "soldiers" around 2 letter "no good" - definition is "tight garments".

21a - Anagram/"resolved" of a word in the clue + K (thousand) - definition is "shade"

17d - Is "out" in the gardening sense - like a flower is "out" - it's also a theme word.

19/25 - "two little boys" are 2 names 3 and 3 both inside a reversed/"from behind" "caveman".

Hi Roof, 18a ‘on’ is a cricket term, a bit sneaky, the soldiers are American. Are you watching the new Scandy drama ‘Those who kill’ ? It’s rather good.

Hi Brendan, with 19/25, don't you need the two names, three and three, as you say, but also both of them followed by a three letter word meaning "catch"? The reversed caveman is then only four letters around all of them.

Thanks Brendan and Jono

I've now got 18ac and 17d.

Yes, I want to watch the new Scandi so I'll have a break at 9.00pm as I can't do crossword and watch sub-titles.
