Rather enjoyed this as I usually do with Paul's offerings but as usual am stuck on my LOI which no one else has mentioned so I must be missing something very obvious or made a mistake with one of my crossers! 2d "16a and musical pattern right for setter" I have _G _R/ _G _ R. Can anyone put me out of my misery with a hint please?

Justsolve, 2d, your crossers are correct. 3 letters for the cooker in 16a, 4 letters for a musical pattern (rather obscure, Hindu in origin), 1 letter right. Setter as in something that sets

Of course! Thanks Janusz & Jono, how I missed that will remain a mystery for all time! I was completely red-herringed by the "setter" part! I was even raking through breeds of dogs!

Need tips to verify my answers to 5d and 17d.
These are themed clues, and I'm pretty sure I have the correct answers. But I can't see how they are parsed.

mikey456, 5d, nan is not a relative, 17d, out as in nature.

I still don't follow the 5d solution.
My answer is a another word for bits.

But I can't see how that fits into my solution: -R-M-S
